Air-Tight homes and Ventalation

Discover why air-tight homes need HRV and ERV ventilation to stay fresh, balanced, and energy efficient.

Home construction materials and building techniques have evolved dramatically over the years. With advanced technology and modern energy-efficiency products, new homes are being built more air-tight than ever before. While this improves efficiency and reduces energy waste, it also creates an unintended downside: without proper ventilation, indoor air can quickly become stale, humid, or contaminated.

Ventilation solutions-once considered optional-are now essential in today’s tightly constructed homes.

Breathe: Inhale and Exhale

Modern homes don’t “breathe” the way older homes did. Air-tight construction can trap stale air indoors, holding onto pet odors, cooking smells, and off-gassing from furniture, carpets, and household products. All of these can contribute to indoor air that feels stuffy or less fresh than you’d like.

Opening windows helps the home “exhale,” but doing so year-round isn’t always practical-especially during temperature extremes. Fortunately, new ventilation products are available that help maintain air freshness without sacrificing energy efficiency.

Types of Ventilation Units

1. Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV)

An HRV pulls in fresh outdoor air and expels stale indoor air, all while exchanging heat between the two. This means your home maintains comfortable temperatures without losing the energy you've already paid for. HRVs are especially beneficial in cooler months when dry, stale air often lingers indoors.

2. Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV)

An ERV works similarly to an HRV but also manages humidity levels by transferring moisture between incoming and outgoing air. This makes an ERV particularly useful in areas with humid climates or homes where maintaining balanced humidity is a challenge—especially during winter or in regions with year-round humidity.

What Do Ventilators Do for My Home?

Even if the air inside your home feels stale, it still contains the warm or cool “energy value” your HVAC system has already created. Ventilators allow your home to refresh its air without losing that valuable conditioned air, helping you maintain comfort and efficiency together.
